The origins of tea cultivation in Nepal trace back to the mid-19th century, when the country's ruling elite first recognized the potential of tea as a valuable agricultural commodity. Historical records suggest that tea plants were introduced to Nepal around 1863, when the then prime minister returned from a visit to China with tea saplings as diplomatic gifts. These first plants were carefully nurtured in the eastern Himalayan region of Ilam, where the cool climate and fertile soil proved ideal for tea cultivation. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Nepal's tea industry developed slowly, largely influenced by the booming tea trade in neighboring Darjeeling. 🍃☕
